<br />It is not uncommon to find a white-collar worker who believes that tone of voice and body language are underrated in effective speaking. Some polish their hand gestures and rehearse specific tones of voice because they believe that substance without style is weak. It&#8217;s not just content, they say, but delivery. Seeking an edge, some even have the famous 7% rule memorized.</p>
<p><strong>The 7% rule states: <br /></strong><br />
<br /><strong>&bull;	55% of meaning comes from presentation <br /></strong><br />
<br /><strong>&bull;	38% of meaning comes from tonality <br /></strong><br />
<br /><strong>&bull;	7% of meaning comes from the words themselves.</strong></p>
<p>Though this has brought confidence and success to some, there are still people who pay more than 7% attention to the words others speak. Neither is a fringe group. However, only the latter has the backing of scientific research.</p>
<p><strong><STRONG>still misunderstood</STRONG></strong><br />
<br />In 1967, Dr. Albert Mehabrian and his UCLA colleagues concluded studies in communication that yielded an astonishing result: The words you use in speaking to others do not matter nearly as much as the tone of your voice or your body language. As the press picked up the story, the idea was extended: written words also take a back seat to presentation and tonality.</p>
<p><strong><STRONG>good for shock value</STRONG></strong><br />
<br />According to Mehabrian and his team, the original studies were never well understood. They have always asserted that words matter very much. Perhaps they didn&#8217;t use the right presentation and tone &#8211; or perhaps the media were hunting for shock value.</p>
<p><strong><STRONG>single-word expressions only</STRONG></strong><br />
<br />The Mehabrian studies attempted to reveal the relative impact of facial expressions and tonality on the understanding of spoken words. Subjects listened to recordings of a female voice saying single words (such as &#8220;maybe&#8221; and &#8220;honey&#8221;) in different tonalities. They were also shown photos of female faces with different facial expressions. They were then asked to guess the emotions portrayed in each, and to link the recordings with the faces.</p>
<p><strong><STRONG>presentation and tone as guides</STRONG></strong><br />
<br />The results of the studies appeared in full in Mehabrian&#8217;s books, Silent Messages (Wadsworth, 1971) and Nonverbal Communications (Aldine Atherton, 1972). In both books, he clearly states that for inconsistent messages or incongruent communications, body language and tonality are probably more reliable indicators of meaning than the words themselves. Presentation and tone are more reliable than words alone for interpretive guidance with single-word expressions. These are not general circumstances.</p>
<p><strong><STRONG>The 7% Rule is a Lie! </STRONG></strong><br />
<br />In a 1994 issue of Anchor Point, Dr. C.E. Johnson writes, &#8220;If these percentages were really valid, it would mean that learning foreign languages could be greatly abbreviated. After all, if the words only account for 7% of the meaning, we should all be able to go to any country in the world and simply by listening to tone and carefully observing body language, be able to accurately interpret 93% of their communications!&#8221;</p>
<p><strong><STRONG>Tone mightier than a sword? </STRONG></strong><br />
<br />In a 1997 issue of The Toastmaster, J.E. Pearson asks, &#8220;Imagine if Nathan Hale had said, &#8216;Okay; I&#8217;m willing to die for my country,&#8217; instead of &#8216;I regret that I have but one life to give for my country.&#8217; Imagine Winston Churchill saying, &#8216;Don&#8217;t be afraid,&#8217; instead of, &#8216;We have nothing to fear but fear itself.&#8217;</p>
<p>Yes; tone of voice and body language matter very much &#8211; especially with single-word expressions. When speaking within a common language and culture do not be fooled by the myth of the 7% rule. Words matter &#8211; probably much more than 7%.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One out of every eight people call themselves a writer, which means there are roughly 24 million people in the United States who carry that banner. Unfortunately there are charlatans and <a href='http://antiscamers.com/'>scam</a> artists just waiting to ambush the unsuspecting author. How can a novice writer protect themselves?</p>
<p>Anyone can call themselves a publisher. Always remember money flows towards the author from the publisher, not the other way round.</p>
<p><strong>What to look out for:</strong></p>
<p>Charges the author a fee up front, to have their book accepted, considered or read. These fees are sometimes called a reading fee, intake fee or administrative fee.</p>
<p>Directs authors toward specific editing services or gives authors&rsquo; names to these services, with the caveat that if the author hires the editing service, their book will be published. Every book needs editing. It is part of the publisher&rsquo;s job to provide that editing at no cost.</p>
<p>Offers a contract where the author has to pay for part of the publishing costs. The acquisition editor will sometimes say that the publisher&rsquo;s list is full for that season, but the author&rsquo;s book has so much going for it, they would still like to publish it. However the publisher&rsquo;s resources are fully committed and the author will have to share in the costs.</p>
<p>Some publishers offer contracts that are unfair, such as they obtain rights that should remain with the author of the work.</p>
<p>Some publishers&rsquo; contracts contain a clause that if the author says anything negative about the publisher, there is a monetary fine.</p>
<p>There are also publishers who hold the rights for a lengthy time period, regardless of whether the book is still in print or selling.</p>
<p>The publisher doesn&rsquo;t disclose they are a Publish on Demand (POD), or vanity/subsidy publisher. There is nothing wrong with an author using a subsidy/vanity publishing company as long as the author is well aware of the disadvantages.  Publish on Demand books are not, as a rule, stocked by bookstores.</p>
<p>Some POD publishers will insist that their books are available in book stores, as a way to get around this issue. Available is not the same thing as stocked. Available only means the book can be <a href='http://www.essay-911.com/order1.php'>order</a>ed through the bookstore. Since the majority of books sold, are stocked and sold by bookstores, this situation puts a damper on sales.</p>
<p>What else can a writer do to check if a publisher is legitimate?</p>
<p>Go to the local bookstore and see if any of the publisher&rsquo;s titles are stocked. Ask the manager if necessary.</p>
<p>Search the Internet using the publisher&rsquo;s name plus the word &lsquo;<a href='http://antiscamers.com/'>scam</a>&rsquo; or &lsquo;complaint.&rsquo;</p>
<p>A publisher&rsquo;s website is targeted to its customers. If the website promotes the books they&rsquo;ve published that&rsquo;s a good sign.</p>
<p>If the website is focused on recruiting writers, that&rsquo;s a bad sign.</p>
<p>Go to forums or bulletin boards that are for writers and see what the authors who have published with the publisher you&rsquo;re considering have to say about their experience.</p>

<p>The most important thing to remember when opening up new business is the location.  When doing your research for your new business you want to make sure you are the only business of your time in the area. If you are opening a video store you do not want to open near another video store. Remember if you are exclusive to the area, you will automatically get the business of those living in that area.</p>
<p>The next most important thing about opening a small business is you supplier. Do not have just one place to get supplies from, you should have several. By having more then one you can assure yourself that you are getting the lowest prices from them. And if they know about each other they will try to outdo each other to get your business.</p>
<p>Make sure that the products or services that you will be offering are desired, do not just decide to open up a store with out doing any market research is like playing craps, dangerous unless you really know what you are doing.</p>
<p>Advertising is important. Remember just like a casino you are trying to make money and not lose it. By spending some money on advertising you will increase your sales from your opening day. It is best to have a professional help you with your advertising rather then dong it yourself, there is no point in spending money on advertising if no one in your target demographic is going to see it. An example of this would be like using facial expressions to bluff in a poker game against blind players.</p>
<p>When picking your stock it is sometime better to have a better selection of items and maybe not so many of each item, this way you can see which items sell best and <a href='http://www.essay-911.com/order1.php'>order</a> more of those more popular items, and less of the less desired ones.</p>
<p>In business you should not try to open a business unless you already have experience running a related business. You may think you know how to, but to do it correctly you really need experience, after all if you were in a casino and looking to play poker you would not want a roulette dealer who is trying to figure out the rules as he goes would you? Chances are you would want an experienced poker dealer.</p>
<p>Depending on the type of business you are opening try keep your staff as small as possible, and if it is possible try to get friends and family to help you out. This will allow you to keep your costs low until you can really get a good idea of if you are making money or not. Once you are making money you can go out and hire people.</p>
