I had my breakthrough while delightful a break from writing. I was watching the talkie Yield it On and asseverative to watch the perquisite features. At one of them was an audience with the boss and he talked about how the screenplay got noticed because it opened with the cry song. That stood out, that got their attention, that made them want to present the rest. I indisputable to take the selfsame approach. I took chances with the start. I started with a letter, a ode, a snippet from a diary. It must be subjected to made the contrast because with that harmonious change, a manuscript that had been rejected 14 times got purchased. –Stacey, Novelist

Carmen’s Allegory: Bring into play Your Strengths

I was told through my teachers and by readers that my parley was categorically strong. So I evident to stop hiding it away and I utter it to be fair out front. I made the key chapter of my untested on the verge of all dialogue. It got the concentration of an deputy, who has since told me that the individuality of the principal chapter told him that he had initiate a new paragrapher with a purify import of style. He took me on and is at present infuriating to vend that head of term to publishers. Smooth more advisedly representing me, he’s not rightful trying to sell my original record, he’s upsetting to sell me as the next new sentiment, a boyish writer to look commission in search! –Carmen, Novelist

Compiler Says: Neglect doing Modesty

Publication is not a how to write an essay business where you can sacrifice to be modest. You suffer with to get in there and accompany what you’ve got. Whatever you do better than dick else, arrive it off. Bod your expand yon your foremost skill. Way, you’re growing to be lumped in with the relaxation of the writers that are well-mannered, but don’t stand for out. –James, Journalist

Columnist Says: I’m Looking repayment for One Id‚e fixe

Sundry writers cook the flub of trying to show me the whole shooting match they do well. Forget it. I’m glancing at hundreds of manuscripts a day. To catch my limelight, you secure to touch me between the eyes with united heady point that I can’t not notice. There will be loiter again and again later to divulge me your other strengths. Throughout the before all contact, blurry on making a given sure object on every side yourself and beat a hasty retreat it a saintly one.
–Darryn, Senior editor

Today, writers have to discover unfamiliar ways to become their material out. The unusual expansion of the ebook industry is no accident. This new mode of circulation is lecherous, economic and extremely profitable.

If you need to start your trendy issue of selling words, the same words, all through and in excess of again without lifting a track down when it’s done, then you suffer with to start strategic now.

Maybe you’ve already started, or is it still decent an idea? Peradventure you just can’t keep at it or the accomplish words seems too far away. Either means, it can be frustrating when your “get-up-and-go” gets up and, well, goes!

It happens to all Free Essays. The dreaded “penny-a-liner’s screen,” the equally troublesome “message block.” Or, worst of all, the “I don’t have anything good saying” block.

The last type of deterrent is definitely the worst lessening to completing your ebook, as it can be damaging to your confidence. Anyone – I duplicate, anyone – has a fabliau to tell. You should prefer to a fairy tale to tell. We all do!

Unless you’re Dr. Wayne Dyer who writes all his books with pen in clap on a wad of paper in a incessant beck of consciousness, you force bear to consider variant ways to get those pages done.
Here are respective ways to keep the words coming:

Points to Paragraphs to Pages

In my matrix ebook, Square Forex Solution™, I had a segment explaining “moving averages” and how to on them to currency trading charts. I knew the message unusually spectacularly as I had acclimatized this graph judgement technique on years trading stocks and currencies.

The problem was I had in no way attempted to elucidate it to anyone else. I avoided that cleave of my ebook after some time. I knew it had to be done, but I kept procrastinating.

The longer I waited, the worst my desire got. Ultimately, I sat down to take a spike at it and in doing so, developed a path to submit it all together that I in the present climate usability regularly.

I decided to make restitution for a lucid point form list of all the tone ideas and information I needed to explain. I jotted them all down as quick as reachable, compelling no breaks.

I didn’t mindfulness what order they were in; I ethical wrote them down on paper one after the other. If I remembered more items, points or details, I just added them to the point of the list.

In front sustained, I had two pages of points I needed to make. I looked over the list and deleted a hardly points I could do without. It’s easier to add while you are on a roll, then printing dele what you don’t miss later.

When I had all the points I needed, I took completely a new stretch of lined paper and rewrote these points in the enjoin I thought they should be presented, as best I could.

I spaced each pith away from with two or three lines in between. I thought about how I would licence this abridgement of steps if I were presenting this text verbally to a class.

How could I present it in an enchanting and open way?

The idea of “impressive averages” can be a fair desiccated discipline, so I endeavored to augment some flavor where I could.

I looked at each of these points and wrote the same or two sentences in the spaces less that explained the point.

Quest of example:

Terminus of Prime Data

The Expire of Hour text is the closing expense of the parentage or currency. Myriad striking customarily curves utter this silhouette and a lay of figures from the days formerly to help cabal the curve on a chart.

Approaching your ebook in this technique makes the blank after less daunting. Plainly defeat it down to the essentials and slowly prolong each point.

Don’t be too anxious around the flood of the points yet. Upright combine a some sentences to each point and in advance of you comprehend it, you’ve written a few pages and oblige developed a nice structure quest of that section.

Don’t reduce as you trek; just earn it down. Editing is in support of later… much later. In the same instant you have gone as plainly as you can, I introduce that you stick a break to step down off some perspective and distance yourself from the elements on the eve of looking it over again.

The Everybody at Your Fingertips

For the sake of the “Information Cube” riddle, consideration yourself the luckiest pencil-pusher aware because on no account in yesterday’s news has so much communication been available so speedily and cheaply. The internet and libraries hold all but the whole kit you need on every field imaginable.

Dissatisfy’s communicate your ebook topic deals with Starting a Insignificant Greensward Sadness Firm pro Training and Profit. Set using by a hair’s breadth the Yellow Pages, it can be fleet and comfortable to enquire all the green sadness businesses in your tract or the federal chains, to perceive what they do and how they do it.

No necessity to reinvent the wheel here. Look for a not many undecorated ways to pay for improvements or some experimental innovative ideas to impel your trade suggestion unique.

See what new things equivalent usefulness profession are doing and appropriate those to sward care. Commemorate, the bestselling ebooks deal with ways to up money. Those are the most excellently ones selling anywhere!

Attend to it Overfamiliar

And eventually, make up encircling something you enjoy and differentiate about. You don’t deceive to become alert down for hours on end. Test writing moral an hour per time, preferably in the morning when your percipience is fresh. Proliferating the hour if you quality you are getting on a roll.

If you are interested in developing into a full-time serious novelist, I can urge several books and ebooks on the question at my website listed below. Right-minded don’t substitute your penmanship time object of your reading rhythm or your ebook choice on no occasion tune in to done.

This is a disposition with which I still struggle. I take too much continually at fault from calligraphy to skim, justifying to myself that I’m suppress doing research.

I store a entirely ashamed pocketsize notepad and commit to writing with me at all times. You should do the same. You under no circumstances recognize where you’ll be when a solicitous idea hits you. If you don’t write it down, it may be misspent forever.

Here’s a minuscule rule you can over: All mod ideas obligated to be written down instanter, no exceptions. Smoke the back of a napkin at a restaurant if you bear to.

Touched by pronto to any rapid inspiration to write. Look at this as a favour that if you wanting to accept force disappear. The urge may not matrix if you remand it off.

And lastly, don’t an end if you get at on a expire; go with it until you are poor if you can. Don’t confusion it; objective submit to these moments of inspiration.

Today, more than every before authors are presented with publishing opportunities that have never existed before. This is not to understate the hard work that authors have to go through to get recognition, write great books, and make a full time living from their passion of expression. However, it is to say that today, due to advances in communications technology, authors can now get their books distributed much easier than they could a decade ago. One very popular way that authors are distributing their work is digitally through ebooks. Digital books are gaining so much popularity that even some of the most popular authors in the world have used it to distribute their books. Stephen King for example published “Riding the Bullet” exclusively in ebook format. When this ebook began distribution over Barns and Nobel and Amazon.com there was so much demand for the download that the servers of these two book giants slowed down almost to a halt. People that wanted to download the ebook were put in a large queue with the hundreds of thousands of other who downloaded the ebook as well.

It’s not only big name authors that are finding success in ebooks. We at Ebook Architect have been helping authors create, market and sell their ebooks online for years now with great success. Many of these people are first time authors and are often amazed with the success of their ebook sales. Below are some of their ebook writing tips.

Don’t underestimate the power of the Ebook

Ebooks are still looked upon as unpopular by many authors who have not yet taken the time to learn about the success within this industry. For example, while the traditional publishing industry growing at the sluggish rate of 5% a year the digital publishing industry is growing at rates between 30% -50%. This means that the opportunities within the publishing industry are growing at a fraction of the rate that opportunities within the digital publishing industry are growing.

To set up an ebook you don’t need to be a tech wizard

Setting up your ebook from the idea conceptualization stage to the selling stage can’t be completed overnight but it is definitely something that can be done by anyone regardless of your technological background. If you can use a word processor then you can create and sell an ebook online. While it is recommended you set up your own website, it is not necessary. There are outlets such as amazon.com, EBay and Lulu.com to name only a few sites that allow you to post your ebook on their servers.

Setting up an Ebook site is virtually costless and you keep 100% of the profits

With traditional publishers you’ll be lucky to see 10% of the profits from your book. With ebooks however, you keep 100% of the profits minus the fees required to set up the site which are minimal. Here is the fee breakdown for ebooks vs traditional books

Ebook vs Book cost

Ebook = Free to create an unlimited number of copies

Book = Approximately $1500 for 200 copies of a 200 page soft cover book

Rights and profit

Ebook = You keep 100% of the profits and rights to your ebooks

Book = You get 10-40% royalty (usually about $2-$5/ book)

With the above examples it is easy to see that for first time authors ebooks make a lot of sense. The risk associated with publishing an ebook is much lower than it is with distributing a soft or hard cover book. Likewise, as an ebook author you’ll keep virtually all of your own profits.

If nothing else, it is something worth consideration. Ebooks may not replace traditional paperback books, but they certainly are gaining popularity at a rate that should make all authors stop to think about how they could use ebooks to their advantage.

You’ve written and compiled an ebook. Now you have to

decide how much to charge for it. Finding the right

price is essential to the success of your product. If

you charge too little, people will think it’s of

little value, and they won’t purchase it, or even it

they do buy your book, you will have to sell thousands

of copies to get to the point where you can begin to

see a profit. If you price it too high when compared

with your competition, you will find yourself steadily

lowering the price, which will cause you all kinds of

new problems in the future. For example, if you sell

your ebook at first for $39.99, and later reduce it to

$24.95, don’t you think the people who bought it for

$39.99 are going to be PISSED?

Choosing the right price for your ebook is one of the

most critical parts of the marketing process. The

first rule of pricing ebooks is to never underprice.

Determine the highest price your audience can afford,

and then if you find your book isn?t selling, you can

always reduce the price. Before you take that step,

make sure you are promoting your book like crazy on

the Internet and on websites. The price should be

aimed at bringing in profits, but you should never

forget that price is one of the factors that people

use in judging the value of your ebook ? before they

buy it. So always start with the highest price, and

then launch a mega-marketing campaign.

Pricing an ebook is particularly difficult because

ebooks are a fairly new commodity. Since they are

digital, the value of an ebook is as confusing as the

understanding of what digital actually is to the

average layperson. This means that we must look at

ebooks in a different light in order to determine

their actual worth in this brave, new cyber world.

Let’s look at the difference between a book in print

and an ebook. A printed book is an object you can hold

in your hand, store on your bookshelf, even hand down

to the next generation. It is priced on factors such

as paper stock, design and production costs, and

marketing.

But the fact that unites ebooks and print books is

that they are composed of ideas. It is the ideas in

these books that have the ability to change, or

possibly transform, people’s lives.

What do you think an idea is worth when evaluated

against the cost of paper and ink?

It is the IDEAS that are valuable! That is how you

determine the cost of your ebook.

What should I charge for my ideas?

There are all different formulas and methods for

determining the correct price for your ebook. Let’s

begin with honing in on your ultimate goals.

Decide if your goal is to get wide distribution and

maximum exposure. This goal is aimed at drawing

customers to your business or service, or to

establishing the credibility of your reputation. If

this is your main goal, you should aim to keep your

price on the low side. Some authors have even priced

their ebooks at a profit loss to draw a high number of

new customers. The key is to find a price that

maximizes your profits and the number of books you

sell.

This is an excellent pricing strategy if you are

looking to acquire long-term customers. Long-term

customers are extremely likely to buy from you again

and again ? as long as the first ebook they buy is of

exceptional quality and beneficial to the customer.

However, if your book contains valuable ? and more

importantly NEW information, references, or techniques

? then you should aim to price it on the high end.

After you figure out your goal, you must figure out

what your audience’s need is for your ebook. For

example, does your book solve a particular problem? If

it does, and solves it in a way that hasn’t been

written about in one hundred other ebooks, you will be

able to achieve high sales at a high price. If your

book solves a problem or answers questions in a new

and unique way, you should price your book as high as

you can go. You will achieve larger profits this way,

but bring in fewer customers. Just make sure the

question or problem that your book solves is one that

is important and relevant to the majority of your

market audience. If your ideas are not common

knowledge, or you are presenting a brand new

technique, you will be able to sell books at a high

price. Just be prepared for your competition to

undercut you on price as soon as they hear about your

book.

Keep in mind that the above pricing strategy is

temporary. Eventually, you will cease to sell books at

this high price. So figure out in advance how long you

plan to offer your ebook at this high price, and when

that time is up, change your pricing strategy.

If you want to see large profits over customer draw,

aim for an audience that is looking for easy solutions

to their problems at a low price. If your book is

aimed at solving one particular problem rather than

general advice, then you can charge more. Start at the

highest price the market will bear to bring in the

largest profits, and plan to discount the book a

number of times throughout the year.

Marketing Strategies

The key that unlocks the sales potential of your ebook

is to find a single sentence that becomes your selling

handle. This sentence states what question or problem

your book answers and the benefits your ebook can

provide. Then be sure to use that sentence in every

piece of sales and promotional material, and every

time anyone asks you about your ebook.

Besides promoting your books assiduously online, there

are several other strategies that can help you sell

more books.

One is to give something away for free with your book,

such as a valuable bonus item. Or bundle several

ebooks under one price, which lowers the price for

each ebook if they were sold separately.

An effective technique for figuring out a price is to

send out a survey to your current customers. If these

customers have already bought an ebook from you, ask

for their opinion in terms of price. Do this by

creating a sales page for the new book, but don’t

include a price on that page. Instead, add a number of

links to survey questions that ask pointed questions

to aid you in assigning a price to your ebook.

Another strategy is to test out prices by creating a

number of duplicate sales pages with different prices

on each page. Make sure your sales copy is exactly the

same on every page, and includes your selling-handle

sentence. Then figure out for each page the conversion

ratio between visitors to your site and sales of your

book. This will tell you what your optimum price is.

Ultimately, if you’ve written a book that solves a

problem or presents a new technique, your book will

bring in both traffic and profits. So be sure to write

that selling-handle sentence that sums up what problem

your book solves and what the benefits of your book

will be to the customers who purchase it. And then

watch your market come to you!

One of the most common questions we get at Ebook Architect is “how much money will I make selling ebooks? Well, like most businesses the answer will depend on many different factors. For example the amount of time you put into the promotion of your ebook will have a direct consequence on sales and market interest in your ebook topic is another important factor. People who are good at picking good ebook topics and promoting their ebooks usually stand to make a lot of money with ebooks.

How Much Money You Ask?

Some Ebook entrepreneurs lose money in the course of a year while some make hundreds of thousands of dollars. More realistically however is somewhere in between these two points. Many ebook authors make between $5,000 and $20,000 a year.

How to Maximize Ebook Sales

The best way to ensure optimum sales is to constantly promote your ebook. This may mean staying in on weekends and staying up late during the week. Some of the best ways to promote your ebook include buying advertising from large advertising portals such as Google and Yahoo, partaking in link exchanges, writing articles for websites and Ezines, building an information dense website and writing great ebook sales pages. Accomplishing all of this is no minor feat. You should expect to be in product development for between 1-6 months and then the promotional aspect may take another 4-12 months. It’s not necessarily an easy job but as stated above the payoff could be substantial.

Worst Case Scenario

Even if you decide half way through the process that ebook entrepreneurship is not your cup of tea, you will still have written an ebook and be selling it online. That makes you an author; congratulations. Not only will you be an author but your ebook may give you some extra pocket change on a monthly basis. If nothing else, it will be a good learning experience. You have nothing to lose, so why not give it a shot?

Article Writing is becoming increasingly valued by Search Engine Optimisers who recognise the benefits that it brings- it is one of the best ways to increase traffic, search engine attention and returning visitors. When your article is published on a website, a link back to your website can be included. This link is valued highly by search engines- it is a one-way link, it is one of the few links on a page and the page has unique content on it. Because of this, many people have found that by regularly publishing articles (once a week, once a fortnight) their page rank has jumped up. This increases your search engine rank, which naturally increases your visit. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that more visitors equals more revenue!

This greatly benefits the author, but many people don’t realise that it also is very beneficial to publishers too. Search engines like sites that are constantly updated, as it shows that the website is active and widely used, and also like sites with content as it shows they are a valuable website, and not a link farm. Similarly to the benefits authors experience, publishers find their website increases in search engine rank, and so traffic and profits. It also has the added bonus to providing something new to users, who will regularly return to your site.

However, they are a few vital rules that authors should follow to make their article widely used. A badly written, unpunctuated article is not going to be looked twice at by any good webmaster.

Perhaps the most important rule in article writing is to properly punctuate your article, and to check it for spelling and grammatical mistakes. This will make it more enjoyable for readers to read, (and so it will be used more), and will make you, and your website, more professional.

Content is obviously the most important thing in any article. So, quite obviously, you have to know what you are talking about, otherwise no one will take you or your article seriously. Remember, your article will top up what people know, not introduce them to the subject. It is therefore helpful to specialise in a couple of subjects, or in a broad area. However, remember not to assume your audience are stupid, or be bigheaded.

Your article should be helpful to webmasters. To be this, give examples of what you are explaining. It makes complicated things easier to understand, splits up an article to make it readable, and can give the reader ideas on how to achieve what you have just explained. Similarly, give links to sites which may help your readers achieve what you have just explained. It makes it easier for them.

The last thing you should think about is the tone your article is written in. It is much easier and pleasanter for the reader if your tone is a friendly one. Also, remember to use words that are easy to read- for example, instead of ‘Furthermore, it has been discovered that by authoring articles writer’s have been advantaged due to their website being recipient to escalated search engine attention’ simply say what you mean- ‘By writing articles you will receive more search engine traffic’ (OK, so maybe it won’t be that extreme!).

The most important thing in your article from your point of view is what you put in the ‘About the Author’ box. This is your chance to shine, and is what you have written the article for. Whatever you write you will still receive the search engine benefits, however you will not receive the extra traffic from readers if you do not write it correctly. It should be formal but friendly, short, and sweet- it will only be glanced at so it has to grab the readers’ attention in a short amount of time. It should follow the structure of ‘A bit about the author, then tell the audience what you want them to do’. You should promote your website, but not advertise it too much.

For example, a bad information box would be ‘Visit the great website of the king of search engine optimisers, who will regularly update you with fantastic tips and priceless advice three times a week. He is a leader in his field and has had many years of experience with thousands of satisfied customers who describe him as the Internet equivalent to Jesus!’. Instead, write ‘Joe Bloggs has had many years experience in SEO, and is well known for his useful advice. Visit his website today to get great SEO tips three times a week’ (Again, this is exaggerated but you get the idea!).

The final part to writing an article is marketing it. This is relatively easy to do- submit to some article directories, and include it in your newsletter (or ask another website to include it in theirs). Some websites to help you submit it are:

.articlewow.com, .articledepot.co.uk, .article99.com.

Follow these tips and you will get a great traffic boost. Write some articles, and then write one on your tips that you have discovered from your own experience!

To be a successful writer and get noticed, being good often isn’t good enough. You have to shine. You have to have something that puts you above all others. Of course though, nobody is perfect. Everyone has faults and flaws. But everyone has talents and abilities too. What’s your talent?

Find your talent and focus on it. Develop it. Showcase it in your writing so it really shines through. Remember, one thing that stands out is far easier to notice than ten things that are good, but not great. Make sure your best skill stands out.

Stacey’s Story: Start With Something Special

I had my breakthrough while taking a break from writing. I was watching the movie Bring it On and decided to watch the bonus features. One of them was an interview with the director and he talked about how the screenplay got noticed because it opened with the cheer song. That stood out, that got their attention, that made them want to read the rest. I decided to take the same approach. I took chances with the start. I started with a letter, a poem, a snippet from a diary. It must have made the difference because with that one change, a manuscript that had been rejected 14 times got purchased. &ndashStacey, Novelist

Carmen’s Story: Use Your Strengths

I was told by my teachers and by readers that my dialogue was really strong. So I decided to stop hiding it away and I put it right out front. I made the first chapter of my novel almost all dialogue. It got the attention of an agent, who has since told me that the individuality of the first chapter told him that he had found a new writer with a clear sense of style. He took me on and is now trying to sell that sense of style to publishers. Even better for me, he’s not just trying to sell my first book, he’s trying to sell me as the next new thing, a young writer to look out for! &ndashCarmen, Novelist

Editor Says: “Forget Modesty”

Writing is not a business where you can afford to be modest. You have to get in there and show what you’ve got. Whatever you do better than everyone else, show it off. Build your work around your best skill. Otherwise, you’re going to be lumped in with the rest of the writers that are good, but don’t stand out. &ndashJames, Editor

Editor Says: “I’m Looking for One Thing”

Many writers make the mistake of trying to show me everything they do well. Forget it. I’m glancing at hundreds of manuscripts a day. To catch my attention, you have to hit me between the eyes with one strong point that I can’t not notice. There will be time later to show me your other strengths. For the first contact, focus on making one clear point about yourself and make it a good one.

&ndashDarryn, Editor

Susan’s Story: Is it Really a Flaw?

In the early days of Susan’s career, everyone advised her that she relied on dialogue too much. So she cut out the dialogue. She kept writing but found her work lacked energy. Years later, she decided to ignore all the advice. The novel came naturally to her and it was almost all dialogue. The book reviews praised her unique style and voice. Susan learned her lesson&ndashnever suppress what comes naturally to you. Remember, what comes naturally to you might be your greatest gift, not your greatest flaw.

Top Six Ways to Find Your Strength

1. Ask other people what stands out about your work.

2. Read some of your best work and make a list of what makes it good.

3. Read through the contents of a book about writing and ask yourself if there is an area you are good at.

4. Think about what other people have said about your work. Are there any comments that keep being repeated?

5. Ask yourself what you care about when you write.

6. What do you like about other people’s work? Often the things you notice in other people’s work are also the things that you are good at.

Whenever you gather writers together they talk about writing. There are many different types of writers. Those who prefer to compose in long-hand or can only write on an old-fashioned manual typewriter. Those who write to music, demand complete silence, or create best surrounded by noise. You have the writers who must plan and outline before they can begin and those who find even talking about a project before it is drafted can stifle their creativity. But one of the most controversial divisions among writers is about whether writing is a skill, craft, or gift.

I admit that I like to stir the fire a bit because I can argue all three points and depending on how my own writing is going at the moment I may find that one viewpoint carries more weight for me personally.

I know as a teacher of writing that writing is a skill. I have taken people, young and old, who loathed writing and believed they would never be able to write — and provided them with basic tips and tools to become good basic writers. I have taken good basic writers and given them the support and direction they’ve needed to become skilled writers. I’ve watched skilled writers with practice and determination become proficient writers. I have seen this in the classroom, at writing conferences, and in newsrooms. I have witnessed this transformation enough to know that writing is a skill that can be taught and a skill that can be learned.

I know as a writer, editor, and reader that writing is a craft. As the definition reads to craft is “to make or produce with care, skill, or ingenuity”. A skilled writer can capture our interest and convey information, but a writer can also craft a story, poem, or essay that touches our emotions as well as our brains. For those who have gone beyond simply skilled to be craftsmen and craftswomen they can rely on their knowledge, experience, and instinct to create writing that does more than simply delivers — it also sings.

I know as a writer and reader that writing is a gift. Some writers simply possess a special quality that allows them to step beyond and above the huddled masses. For some it is a special ability to shape words into images and ideas and for some it is a unique vision of this world (or another) that speaks to our souls in a way others cannot.

Are writers born or made? Many people argue that some gifted writers are born, but I am not convinced. Perhaps you could have some predisposition but I believe that writers are made. They are made in the rocking chair when Mother reads “Goodnight, Moon”; they are made under the cover with a flashlight when you simply must finish “The Hobbit” for the first time; they are made when you proudly pocket your first library card; they are made when you fill your first notebook; they are made when you submit your first poem, article or story for publication; they are made when you receive your first rejection; and they are made when you turn the computer on every day to write.

I believe some writers are supremely gifted but even so does that mean it was a gift given to them whole or was it a gift developed through years of reading, writing, talking, and thinking about words?

So, I believe, writing is all three — a skill, a craft, and a gift. Some writers find their ability spans all three while others never progress past the level of skill.

One common element whenever human beings gather is the need to talk and share experiences. Often that need turns into something a little more fun, a little more dangerous — gossip. Gossip is often fun but it can also be dangerous because it spreads quickly (because it is fun) and often distorts or even completely avoids the truth. Gossip creates myths in many fields and professions, and the field of writing is especially prone.

The top five myths about writing are:

Myth 1: Writing is easy for some people. Let me tell you that is just about the biggest myth going. I have been a professional writer for going on three decades now. I also know many other professional writers of various ages, experience, and income. I don’t know a writer that will tell you that writing is easy. Writing is brutal, hard work and there are times when I think it would be easier to simply open a vein as Red Smith said. However experience and practice can make many writing tasks easier. There are some writing tasks that I can almost accomplish on autopilot because I have written that specific format and/or topic a lot.

Myth 2: Writing requires talent. I won’t lie. Talent can certainly help and talent is what separates the great writers from the good writers. But the truth is that talent is not enough to make a writer great or even good and talent is not a necessary requirement to be a good writer. Writing is a skill that can be learned, developed and honed. If you practice your craft, if you read the writing of others to learn more about your craft, and if you seek and accept guidance and suggestions about your writing then you will improve and grow as a writer. Dedication harnessed with talent can create amazing results but if I had to pick just one then I would go with dedication. You can always increase your skill level through dedication.

Myth 3: Writing isn’t an useful skill. I have made my living as a writer for my entire professional life but even if you don’t intend to make your living with words you will need this crucial skill. There simply isn’t a profession that does not involve writing. Perhaps the form will vary, but written communication is the cornerstone in every professional field. Your writing ability will often impact landing a job as well as advancing in your career. Today written communication is even more crucial in professional and personal relationships.

Myth 4: You can’t make a living as a writer. I can remember when I told my father that I wanted to be an English major in college. He was very worried that I wouldn’t be able to support myself. The truth is that I have never had trouble finding a job and today I own my own business because of this flexible and important skill. Not only can you make a living as a writer but writing is an essential tool for many other careers and professions.

Myth 5: Writers block is alive and torturing writers as you read this. I’m not dismissing the difficulties inherent in dealing with writers block but whenever I talk with writers purportedly suffering from it they fall within two general groups. The first group actually creates their own block by insisting on the perfect place, mood, or alignment of planets in order to write. This is beyond ridiculous. One of the many benefits I gained from years of newsroom experience is the ability to write in almost any condition or mood. Deadlines will teach anyone how to give writers block short shrift. The second group I have more sympathy for as their problem really is internal in nature. Usually the problem is that the particular story (whether fiction or nonfiction) they want to tell is not yet finished cooking in their brain. In this case, while the writing may be stalled I don’t agree that it is blocked. The writer must listen to that inner voice and respond appropriately. Sometimes the idea needs more time to percolate and sometimes more research and/or planning is necessary. Once the proper adjustments are made the writing will begin to flow again.

Don’t let your writing fall victim to these five myths about writing.

Today, writers have to find new ways to get their material out. The phenomenal growth of the ebook industry is no accident. This new medium of distribution is fast, efficient and extremely profitable.

If you want to start your new business of selling words, the same words, over and over again without lifting a finger when it’s done, then you have to start right now.

Maybe you’ve already started, or is it still just an idea? Maybe you just can’t keep at it or the finish line seems too far away. Either way, it can be frustrating when your “get-up-and-go” gets up and, well, goes!

It happens to all writers. The dreaded “writer’s block,” the equally troublesome “information block.” Or, worst of all, the “I don’t have anything worth saying” block.

The last type of block is truly the worst impairment to completing your ebook, as it can be damaging to your confidence. Anyone &ndash I repeat, anyone &ndash has a story to tell. You have a story to tell. We all do!

Unless you’re Dr. Wayne Dyer who writes all his books with pen in hand on a pad of paper in a continuous stream of consciousness, you will have to find alternative ways to get those pages done.

Here are several ways to keep the words coming:

Points to Paragraphs to Pages
